Radio-Frequency Identification uses a reader and a passive tag. The reader emits a radio field; the tag harvests energy from it and sends back its stored ID or data. RFID works at Low Frequency (125 kHz), High Frequency (13.56 MHz, ISO 14443 / 15693) and Ultra-High Frequency (860–960 MHz).
Logistics, access control, laundry tracking, livestock, tolling and item-level retail inventory are all classic RFID use cases — often where you need to read many tags at once, at distance, or through packaging.
Near-Field Communication is a standards-based short-range mode built on 13.56 MHz HF RFID. An NFC device can act as a reader, a tag, or both, and can swap data peer-to-peer. Tap-to-pay, transit cards and phone pairing are NFC.
NFC is designed for a tap (a few centimetres), for a human-initiated action, and for secure two-way exchange. That makes it ideal for payments, identity and onboarding.
