NFC is not one behavior but three roles a device can play, and the role decides what your product can do. In reader/writer mode a phone reads a tag or writes to it; in peer-to-peer mode two phones exchange data directly; in card emulation mode a phone becomes a contactless card a terminal accepts. Mixing them up produces features that never ship. This article explains the three NFC operating modes and where each one belongs.
All three modes share the same 13.56 MHz HF link and the same tap gesture, but they invert who is the initiator. Reader/writer mode has the active device power and poll a passive tag (or a card) to read NDEF or push a record — this is product pairing and top-up. Peer-to-peer mode lets two active devices alternate as initiator and target to swap contacts, photos or handshakes (the basis of Android Beam's lineage). Card emulation mode makes the device behave like a passive smart card so a POS or access reader treats it as a payment or ID credential; with Host Card Emulation (HCE) the secure element work moves to a phone app sandbox, while embedded secure element keeps keys in hardware. The choice tracks whether you are scanning, swapping or being scanned.
NFC devices in their three roles, from a phone reading a tag to two phones exchanging data and a phone emulating a contactless card.
Reader/writer turns a phone into a tag scanner and writer for pairing, links and provisioning. Peer-to-peer enables direct device-to-device exchange, useful for pairing and ad-hoc sharing when both sides are active.
Card emulation lets a phone act as a contactless card for payment, transit and access. HCE runs the applet in software; an embedded secure element keeps secrets in tamper-resistant hardware for higher assurance.
