Not all NFC tags are interchangeable. The NFC Forum defines five tag types that differ in memory, security, communication speed and the chips behind them, and picking the wrong one can break compatibility or leave a use case underpowered. From the simple NTAG stickers used in marketing to the secure DESFire tokens behind transit and access, each type fits a different job. This article compares tag types 1 through 5 so you can select the right NFC tag for your product.
NFC tag types sit on top of the same 13.56 MHz HF air interface but standardize different feature sets so readers know what to expect. Type 1 and Type 2 are low-cost, read-write tags with modest memory, perfect for pairing and lightweight data; Type 3 (FeliCa-based) adds faster block transfers and is common in Asian transit; Type 4 brings structured, APDU-based files with strong security (often DESFire or JCOP) for payment, access and identity; Type 5 maps ISO 15693 long-range tags for item-level and industrial reads. The choice tracks memory need, security level and which ecosystems you must interoperate with.
NFC tags in their many physical forms, from low-cost stickers to secure contactless tokens.
Cheap read-write tags, small memory (48 bytes to a few KB), broad phone compatibility. Used for pairing, links and simple product interaction; limited security.
Type 4 adds APDU files and strong crypto for payment and access; Type 5 offers longer range and industrial ruggedness. Higher cost, higher assurance and richer applications.
