Hot-stamping uses a engraved heated die and a foil roll; the die presses the foil onto selected areas in one crisp impression. Digital foil prints the foil-adhesive image first (often in the same pass as personalization) and transfers foil only where the image is, so each card can carry a unique mark with zero tooling - at the cost of a slightly thinner foil layer and more process steps.
