Every card line has to move individual cards from one station to the next. The feeder - the device that pulls a single card from a stack and presents it - sets the ceiling on speed and reliability. The two classic mechanisms are friction, where a rubber wheel grips the top card, and vacuum, where suction lifts it. Picking the wrong one shows up as mis-feeds, double picks, and stoppages. This article explains how each works and where each wins.

How a Card Line Picks the Next Card

A friction feeder uses a driven wheel or belt that grips the top card and pulls it forward while a separator blocks the second card, preventing double-feeds. It is simple, cheap, and works on most rigid cards, but humidity, static, and worn surfaces invite mis-feeds and occasional double picks. A vacuum feeder uses suction cups or a porous belt to lift the top card off the stack; it handles coated, static-sensitive, and slightly warped cards more gently and with far fewer doubles, at the cost of more upkeep on cups and the air system. The choice tracks card surface, stack height, and line speed.

Trade-offs That Decide the Feeder

Friction Feeder

Low cost, few moving parts, good on rigid dry cards; sensitive to surface finish, static, and humidity; an occasional double-feed needs a reliable separator.

Vacuum Feeder

Gentle on coated and static-prone cards, very low double-feed rate, handles lightly warped stock; needs clean air, cup upkeep, and slightly higher capital.
