Lamination is the step that turns loose layers into a durable, weather-resistant product, but the requirements for a thin RFID inlay and a multi-layer smart card are very different. This guide explains where the two processes diverge and how to specify the right press.
An RFID inlay is typically a printed PET or paper web carrying the antenna and chip, encapsulated between two thin protective films. The goal is to protect the antenna without shifting the chip or stretching the web. Lower temperature and pressure, tight web tension control, and anti-static handling matter more than raw clamping force.

A finished smart card stacks PVC/PETG core, printed overlays, and embedded modules under high pressure and heat to fuse into a rigid ISO card. Here, uniform thickness, void-free bonding, and post-lamination flatness dominate. Hydraulic or servo presses with precise platen parallelism are standard.
