After personalization and overlay, cards receive a clear coating or varnish that resists abrasion, chemicals and daily handling. Curing converts liquid coating into a solid film in milliseconds, locking in color and protection before collation.
Traditional UV systems fire a broad spectrum from a mercury vapor lamp. The intense, multi-wavelength output cures almost any formulation but radiates significant heat.

Larger ballast and cooling hardware.
LED-UV emits a narrow, single-wavelength band matched to modern photoinitiators. It is instant-on, cool, and far more energy efficient.
LED-UV costs more upfront but pays back through lamp life, energy savings and fewer rejects from heat deformation. Mercury-arc stays useful where existing chemistry is optimized for broad-spectrum cure.

For new card lines, LED-UV is the recommended default: lower heat protects inlays and overlays, and the long diode life cuts lifetime cost. Keep mercury-arc only when re-qualifying existing broad-spectrum coatings.
