EMV & NFC Contactless Payment Card Production: Requirements & Process Flow

Publish date: 2026-09-08

Bank payment cards must satisfy strict EMV and NFC contactless specifications before they reach a wallet. This guide walks the production flow and the key checkpoints that separate a compliant card from a reject.

What Makes a Payment Card Different

Unlike a plain ID card, a payment card carries both a contact module (EMV) and a contactless antenna (NFC), must pass electrical and mechanical specs, and is audited by the scheme (Visa, Mastercard, UnionPay). Every step is documented and sampled.

Core Process Flow

A typical dual-interface card moves through laminating the antenna, milling the cavity, embedding the module, printing and personalizing, then finishing and testing.

  • Antenna lamination: embed the NFC coil between core sheets.
  • Cavity milling: route the precise pocket for the module.
  • Module embedding: flip-chip or wire bond placed and secured.
  • Offset / digital printing of the card face and security features.
  • Personalization: encode the EMV applet and print the PAN.
  • Electrical test: contact and contactless read at defined distances.

✔ Contactless range

Tuned for 0-4 cm read, no false triggers.

✔ Module

Dual-interface, scheme-approved contact pad.

✔ Security

Hologram, UV ink, guilloche where required.

Antenna Tuning & Compliance

The NFC antenna must be impedance-matched so the card is read reliably by POS terminals yet stays inside field-strength limits. Final cards are sampled for torsion, temperature cycling and magnetic-stripe (if present) checks.

Selection Quick Reference

CheckpointRequirement
ModuleDual-interface, scheme-approved
AntennaTuned 13.56 MHz, in-field limit
PersonalizationEMV applet + secure PAN print
Final testContact + contactless read, mechanical

Build payment cards as a controlled, sampled process: antenna tuning and final electrical test are the two gates that protect scheme approval and real-world acceptance at the terminal.
