Security holograms and custom foils give payment, ID, and membership cards their first line of visual authentication. Two application routes dominate production lines: hot-stamping and cold-foil transfer. Each changes adhesion, registration tolerance, tooling cost, and line speed in ways that directly affect yield and unit economics.

How Foil Is Applied to the Card Surface

A hologram arrives as a metallized layer carried on a polyester carrier film. In hot-stamping, a heated die presses the foil against the card so the adhesive activates and the image releases onto the surface in the shaped area of the die. In cold-foil transfer, a printed adhesive pattern is laid down first and the foil is laminated under pressure without heat, so the metal bonds only where adhesive was printed. The distinction matters because heat can stress a finished card body, while cold transfer shifts the precision burden onto the print and registration stage.

Where Each Method Fits

Hot-stamping strength

The activated adhesive gives excellent abrasion and chemical resistance, so the hologram survives years of handling, wallet friction, and cleaning wipes without peeling at the edges.

Cold-foil flexibility

Because adhesion is printed rather than die-cut, the same roll serves multiple designs and fine line art, which shortens changeover and suits short personalized runs.
