Smart Card Module Tape & Reel Automated Handling System

Published: July 22, 2026

The final packaging step for many smart card modules is tape-and-reel handling, which protects delicate contacts and enables automated feeding into downstream card personalization or mailing systems. ZOWINDA's tape & reel automated handling system takes modules from bulk or tray input, tests and orientates them, and packs them into embossed carrier tape with sealed cover tape ready for SMT-style integration.

Bridging Module Production and Automated Assembly

Smart card modules are small, fragile and easily damaged by static or mechanical shock. Once they leave the module implanting or testing station, they need protection and standardized presentation for the next process. Tape-and-reel packaging is the industry-standard solution because it keeps each module in a separate pocket, prevents contact deformation and supports automatic pick-and-place at the customer end.

The handling system connects directly to module testers or implanting machines. Modules are transferred into the tape pockets with gentle vacuum pickup, and a cover-tape sealing station applies heat-activated or pressure-sensitive tape over the carrier. Integrated optical inspection confirms pocket occupancy, module orientation and seal quality.

Flexible Input and Output Options

The machine can accept modules from vibratory bowl feeders, trays or direct infeed from a connected tester. Output options include standard 13-inch reels, cut tape lengths or direct transfer to a downstream station. Recipe-driven changeover lets the same platform handle SIM, banking-card or ID-module formats by swapping pocket tooling and feed tracks.

By automating what is often a manual packing operation, manufacturers reduce labor content, improve traceability and deliver modules in a format that downstream equipment can consume without additional handling.
