Web Inspection: Monochrome Vision vs Color Vision for Print Defect Detection
Web Inspection: Monochrome Vision vs Color Vision for Print Defect Detection
Publish date: 2026-09-01
Print defects on RFID labels and cards range from missing text to color drift and contaminant spots. Monochrome and color machine-vision inspection cover different defect classes at different cost, and the right mix protects yield without over-spending on cameras.
Monochrome Vision Inspection
Monochrome cameras with high-contrast lighting excel at detecting structural defects: missing or broken print, misregistration, die-cut errors, and foreign objects. They are fast, affordable, and stable under varying ambient light, making them the workhorse for 100% inline inspection of text and barcode legibility.

When Color Vision Pays Off
Color drift detection
Color cameras catch brand-color shifts and gradient banding that monochrome systems cannot see, protecting labels where color accuracy is a contractual requirement.
Contaminant spotting
Subtle oil, dust, and tone variations show up in chroma channels, catching contamination before it reaches the laminator.
