The lamination press is the heart of smart card body production, fusing printed cores, overlays, and embedded inlays under heat and pressure. Two drive technologies dominate the floor: mature hydraulic presses and increasingly common servo-electric (all-electric) presses. This article compares them on the variables that actually affect card quality and operating cost.
A hydraulic press uses an oil pump and cylinder to generate clamp force; pressure is regulated by a relief valve and is inherently damped, which is forgiving for large, uneven stacks. A servo-electric press drives a ball screw with a closed-loop servo motor, giving precise, repeatable force and position profiles with fast response. For card lamination, where a flat, uniform bond line matters, the servo's positional accuracy and cycle-to-cycle repeatability are compelling, while hydraulics win on low capital cost and robustness for heavy platens.
